10 Ways To Update Your Kitchen On A Budget
The first thing is first, declutter your space. It is very easy to have overcrowded cabinets of Tupperware you don't use, food that has expired, etc. Clear every cabinet out one at a time and go through it. Your space will already feel so much better and you have spent no money. Make sure everything in your kitchen is serving a purpose for you. Clear your countertops of clutter. If you have space to keep your sponges and soap under your sink in organizers then do so. Your kitchen will invite you in to cook if you have space to cook in.
Kitchen Rug- Instead of a kitchen mat at your sink, pick out a colorful rug or something with texture.
Change out your utensil holder- Changing out your utensil holder can change the feel of your countertop. Pick out a cool handmade pot, or a wood holder.
Kitchen knobs- Changing out your kitchen knobs is a really quick way to update your cabinetry without painting them. Your kitchen might feel outdated but you may not be able to update the cabinets or countertop. Changing the knobs to your style can quickly make the overall feel of your kitchen soften that outdated feel.
Install floating shelves- floating shelves are both functional and aseptically pleasing. You can use them in any room and display anything that you want.
Lighting-changing your lighting can bring a big bang to your space without breaking your bank account. Search for thrifted lights and make your own DIY out of them. I bought this light for $10 on craigslist. It was brown and didn't match my space so I spray painted it black.
Bring in some greenery- Bringing some plants in your kitchen makes the space feel fresh.
Let your walls speak- If you can paint, paint a focal wall. Create a faux shiplap wall as I did. If you are in a rental and you can’t do anything like that, hang some wall art that inspires you. Install peel and stick wallpaper or peel and stick tiled backsplash.
Show off your pantry food- Bring out some of your favorite food to cook with and display it in jars. Colorful food and spices are exciting. When you bring it out on display it says, “cook with me”. I have noticed a huge difference in how much I am using my pantry food once I brought items out on display compared to when they were shoved back in my cabinet,
Texture something- If you can, texture something in the space. Shiplap a wall or create a paneling on your cabinet doors. Throw a table runner on your kitchen table if your dining room is in your kitchen like mine. Texture creates dimension and I feel like it almost always becomes a conversation piece. If you have a conversation piece in your kitchen maybe it will spark some joy in you to want to cook in there.
Paint your cabinets- I kept this for last because I know that painting your cabinets can’t always be attainable. Maybe you are in a rental and that isn’t allowed. But it also is the most expensive thing on this list. I feel like if you do the first 9 and you aren’t liking the vibe of your kitchen, then this can be an option to change up your space dramatically. Painting cabinets can be so fun. It takes a bit of time but can be a huge bang for your buck. You can go as subtle and minimal as you want, or as bold and funky as you want. It’s your kitchen. So do something YOU love!
